Join Dr. Shanker for this deep dive into Dr. Stanley Greenspan’s influence on the Self-Reg Framework. Dr. Greenspan (1914-2010) was considered to be one of the world’s leading authorities on clinical work with young children. His research and clinical insights have had a profound impact on our understanding of child development, children’s emotional and mental health, and autism, among other things. Dr. Shanker did intensive training in psychotherapy with Dr. Greenspan in the 1990s, and work that had a big influence on the development of Self-Reg. In this two-part webinar Dr. Shanker will outline and unpack Dr. Greenspan’s most important ideas.

In Part 1, Dr. Shanker begins his exploration of Dr. Greenspan’s ideas on early emotional, social, and cognitive development, including:
  • The stages of ego development in early childhood
  • Unpacking emotional interactions and response in babies and toddlers
  • Why some children withdraw from certain stimuli and what does it mean
  • Connections between children’s emotional responses and their arousal states
  • Homeostasis in very early childhood
  • How excess stress can constrict children’s participation in beneficial emotional interactional experiences
  • The importance of children’s ability to learn to see and understand patterns
  • The roots and beginnings of self-regulation
  • Stranger anxiety, what is means, and how a child learns to manage and overcome it

Part 2 offers a deep dive into the work of Dr. Stanley Greenspan and its influence on the development of the Self-Reg Framework. Talking points will include:
  • Unpacking the caregiver as a “secure base”
  • Co-regulation in very early childhood
  • How babies learn to exchange signals and communicate with caregivers
  • Learning to tolerate stress

Dr. Stuart Shanker

Stuart Shanker is the author of the Self-Reg trilogy: Calm, Alert, and Learning: Classroom Strategies for Self-Regulation (Pearson 2012), Self-Reg: How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Successfully Engage With Life (Penguin 2016), Reframed: Self-Reg for a Just Society (UofT Press 2020); and with Susan Hopkins, Self-Reg Schools: A Handbook for Educators (Pearson 2019). In 2012, Stuart founded The MEHRIT Centre as a Self-Reg learning and information centre for parents, educators, the leaders of today, and the leaders of tomorrow.
