Scientists now understand that the better people can self-regulate, the better they can develop and use emotional, cognitive, and social skills and rise to the challenges of living and learning.

But what exactly is self-regulation? How does it develop? What are the long-term implications of optimal self-regulation? What can we do, very early in children’s lives, to support and enhance modes of self-regulation that enhance growth and well-being? The answer is largely a story about stress, how stress affects us, and what we can do to help children (and ourselves) understand, recognize, and manage various kinds of stressors.

In this revitalized introduction to Self-Reg, Dr. Stuart Shanker will not only address what Self-Reg is and how it works, he will also dive more deeply into Practice 5 of Self-Reg, sharing new insights into the strategies that promote resilience and restoration very early in children’s lives.

Topics include:
  • The all-important difference between self-regulation and self-control
  • The brain/body science of stress: the impact of an excessive stress load on energy and tension, and, and in turn, behaviour, mood, and learning
  • The five domains of self-regulation and the five practices of Self-Reg, with a deeper dive into Practice Five: Restore.
